Cave monastery complex and Borjomi
Tbilisi - Vardzia - Borjomi - Tbilisi
The first destination of the trip taking off from Tbilisi is Vardzia. The Cave monastery site of Georgia is located in the southern part of the country, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountains. The highest cave is as high as 1462 meters above sea level. The building of this cave complex was initially started by Giorgi III and continued and finished by the only queen of Georgia Tamar (XII-XIII Century). The name of the complex too, as the legend says, is connected to those persons. “Vardzia” literally means “am uncle”. As the story goes Tamar was lost in the cave while being on the hunt with her father and servants so when one of them called for her she answered: Here I am uncle - hence the name of the cave.
The complex includes 15 churches, the main of which is one in the name of Assumption of Mary. Here visitors can see the mural paintings of Giorgi III, Tamar, other nobles, and scenes from the gospel.
Following the Soviet rule, in its initial phase, Vardzia was merely a tourist base, and in 1989, guided by the blessing of Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, the liturgy was revived, and later, a monastery life too in 1997.
The next stop is in Borjomi, the historical side of Georgia. This place is perfect for the ones who enjoy fresh air, forests, healing and mineral waters, and many monuments, fields, and lakes covered and hidden in green grass. We recommend visiting Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and Green Monastery. The latter was built by the students of St. Grigol Khandtstheli. It has almost no decorations and is built of hewn stones. On the territory of the monastery even nowadays it's possible to see the extraordinary relics of monks and traces of blood shed by them in times of hardships. It is extraordinarily beautiful as it is almost part of nature with its close to no decorations. One could think that it is a part of the forest built with no touch of a human.
