Dmanisi, Bolnisi and Tsugrugasheni
This short but astonishing auto tour starts in the sunny capital city of Georgia. For those interested in Georgian history and its antiquities, this tour is a must-see.
First stop is the Dmanisi Archaeological site, where the oldest European Skeleton remains were found, continuing with Dmanisi Sioni Cathedral built in the 6th century.
The tour carries on to Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral, the oldest Georgian architectural monument, built in 478-493. On the walls of Basilica you will find the oldest Georgian inscriptions from 494 AD.
To fully experience the ancient history of Georgia, you can visit The Bolnisi Museum, which is filled with archaeological collections dated from the New Stone Age up to late medieval times.
We continue this tour with Tsugrugasheni Church, built in the 13th century. It has a relaxing atmosphere around and is a resemblance of the Golden Age architecture, expressed with highly detailed stone ornaments and weird inside form of construction. In the temple, on the south wall, there is so called hidden place (its so narrow, that only a hand can reach it), where is inserted a stone, which depicts a Bolonian cross in a carved circle and Georgian inscription.
If interested, one can see The Municipality of Bolnisi in detail, which is an utterance of mixed culture: Armenian, German, Azerbaijani and, of course, Georgian. If desired, you can find a few wineries there too.
Last stop is a Hotel Deutsche Muehle Bolnisi. is a unique Hotel-Restaurant located in the center of Bolnisi. They serve Georgian and German cuisine. If you wish to stay in Bolnisi for a day or two, this is a perfect place. The hotel is located in the middle of a well-kept complex directly on the river Mashavera with an outdoor terrace, sofas, tables and umbrellas surrounded by greenery. This renovated German built mill is an interesting blend of modernity and antique.
